RANGES OF COMBAT

It is known that regardless of style, there are four ranges

of combat : In the empty hand it is known as the kicking range,

punching range, standup trapping or grapple range and take down

on the ground grappling range. Most martial arts may have techniques

that is specific to only one range. In any case all systems of

martial arts have their strong points and weak points. In Kali

Eskrima - Arnis the range is broken down into the same basic

range but later defined in a more technical break down.

The four ranges of weaponry : is long range - when you can hit

the opponents hand with the tip of your weapon but he cannot hit

you, middle range where you can block your opponents stick and

touch his hand but cannot touch his head, close range is when

you are close enough to strike your opponents head with the

butt of your weapon and grappling range when you can grab with

your weapon and pull your opponent close to you and onto the

ground.

THE FLOW

Learning to flow with a weapon sounds a lot harder then it really

is. Obtaining the ability to flow in combat is the goal in the

opinion of the author. The practitioner attempts to smoothly move

between the ranges of combat without any disturbance in the

transition. It requires the knowledge and skill in all of four

ranges (with and without a weapon), this is the ability to put

motion and technique together continuously, developed

sensitivity to fit into the technique and to your opponent.

The student must first accomplish two things simultaneously :

the body mechanics of the actual technique weather a stick or

blade this must be learned, then one's personal attributes must

be developed to a higher level of coordination. Definition of

attributes in reference to weaponry is the qualities of

sensitivity, timing, reflex, line familiarization, power and

technical skill (knowledge of the weapon).

Once the student has progressed with those two stages then drills

are incorporated to enhance and developed the technique and

attributes.

These drills include set patterns, dead patterns and sensitivity

drills that will be shown latter such as numbering systems,

counter for counter and energy - exchanging drills. Again,

you cannot learn martial arts or everything about martial arts

in a book. The drills and progressions are documented to divulge

the information to the readers. If you find the drills, exercise

or progressions useful go out and seek a opened minded instructor

who will instruct you with the finer points of these progressions.
